The link between mental health and physical health is generally misunderstood.
They’re typically considered two separate entities; however, the
two actually go hand-in-hand.
How Mental Health Affects Physical Health
For example, depression has been linked to 67% increased risk of death
from heart disease and 50% increased risk of death from cancer. You might
develop high blood pressure or a stomach ulcer after an extremely stressful
event, such as the death of a loved one.
There are various ways you can improve your emotional health. First, try
to recognize your emotions and understand why you have them. Figuring
out the causes of stress, sadness, and anxiety in your life can help you
manage your emotional health.
The following are effective ways to improve your mental and physical health:
-
Maintain a regular exercise routine. Exercise releases “feel good” brain chemicals, such as endorphins
and serotonin, which can ease anxiety and depression. Whether it’s
working on your cardio or enrolling in a yoga class, choose a form of
exercise that works for you.
-
Eat healthy. Eating high calorie, low-nutrient, and processed foods have been linked
with increased depression and anxiety. Skipping meals can result in fatigue
and unhealthy snacking. Commit to a diet that includes vegetables, fruits,
whole grains, nuts, fish, and healthy fats. Furthermore, a healthy diet
can increase brain function.
-
Maintain a normal sleep schedule. Not getting enough sleep has been linked with depression, anxiety, and
stress. Adults should get a recommended seven or more hours of sleep per
night. If you are experiencing difficulties falling or staying asleep,
try lowering your caffeine intake, relaxing before bed, or setting a stricter
bedtime schedule.
-
Get support. Do not be afraid to reach out to friends and family for mental health support.
